Precious Moments: Shaping Lives Through Friendship by Kathy Cobb

Time seemed to stand still when I watched my daughter, Brittany, receive her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies!  Memories of a darling little bundle of joy flooded my mind as I recalled the first time I held her in my arms. From the moment she looked into my eyes, I was in love and knew my life would be better because of her!  From the beginning, Brittany loved learning and was always fascinated with the world around her.  In her early years, she was exposed to people from around the world that taught her to celebrate the nations!  Of course, at the time I never would have imagined that my international friendships would make such an impact on her life!

Upon this revelation I started thinking about the friendships in my life that have made me a better mother and adult friend to my daughter. Sweet memories of my great grandmother’s pioneering spirit, my grandmother’s determination and my mom’s ability to see the best in a person were foundational in shaping my life.  However, there were others: Kay- who helped me discover my spiritual side, Gaye- who spoke words of affirmation, Ellen- the warrior who taught me how to pray, Trisha- my encourager when I felt like a bad mother, Shannon- steady and dependable, Lisa- the one I called when I needed a shoulder to cry on, and Ann- who taught me how important etiquette was in a young girl’s life.  When I realized how important my friends were in shaping Brittany’s life, I was overwhelmed with thankfulness!

When Brittany approached me after the diploma ceremony, I saw a young woman filled with confidence and in my heart I heard my friends’ voices celebrating with me – she’s beautiful and we are so proud of the woman she has become!!

The Gift of Reciprocity in Life and Business by De Harris, WOW Founder

The Gift of Reciprocity in Life and Business by De Harris, WOW Founder

It came upon me recently to share with you the word ‘Reciprocity’ and its true meaning and what it can mean to you in improving your life and business. The underlying Rule of Reciprocity requires an individual to pay back or return what another individual has given them – whether it is a physical gift or a service. Most people believe in giving back when people give to you. The power held within this real is that the person providing the benefit is ensured of a future benefit from the other individual in return. In order to take, you must be willing to give back. This action is defined as ‘Reciprocation’ since you are essentially returning the favor or action of another person has provided you. Reciprocation is a powerful action which provides for the development of trusting personal and business relationships. By reciprocating,  you are essentially ‘paying them back’ for a service or gift that they have provided you with as you continue the cycle of trust. This is necessary in any relationship for it allows you to have a deeper connection and is beneficial for you both.  This also builds confidence within the relationship because you can rely on the other person to return the favor knowing that your actions are not being taken for granted but also keeping in mind that it does take time to build that level of trusting reciprocity. Though receiving is not the focus when ‘giving’ , it is a measurement of the future doom of  lopsided relationships. You must put your trust in that your actions will be reciprocated. It may not be from who you gave to but you will find through giving that you will never be without when you allow reciprocity to work within your life and business. It is not only fun to give but giving also provides the basis of trust while strengthening the bond  you have with others.

The Gift of Reciprocity_gameplan_for_successBe aware of occasions when one person in the relationship ends up giving on a larger scale or with more frequency then  what is returned within the relationship since this can cause tension as the other person may feel as if they have been short sided, slighted or simply ripped off. Relationships should be mutually beneficial, so it is important to avoid this type of situation at all costs since this negatively affects the relationship and future reciprocal actions.  Not everyone has the same resources or inclinations when it comes to what they can actually give in return. Therefore, it is best to discuss should the situation arise. By doing so and deciding what each has to offer one another, you can come to a win-win solution. If you find that the law of reciprocity is not upheld by the recipient, this can serve as a deal-breaker for future encounters. Yes, there are users and leaches in this world. Stay open so you can honestly communicate and continue to positively influence the amount of trust and growth within the relationship. The point is to do what is necessary to cultivate stronger and mutually beneficial relationships over time.

As business women it is important to always uphold the Rule of Reciprocity and regard the law with much respect. Trusting relationships are important for building long lasting-relationships and can have either a positive or negative effect on your career depending whether you choose to partake in the action of reciprocity or not. Be the one who always takes the lead in doing right instead of focusing on being right. When you do, you will find that the action of reciprocity always works in your favor. The good generated are the building blocks that allow for mutually satisfying relationships that form a great foundation in your life and business. Reciprocity is the highest form of humanity. Take a leap for you will gain the most in the end. Remember, a happy life equals a happy business!

Summer Vacation Insights: Aruba Your Way by Bonnie Gortler

Summer Vacation Insights: Aruba Your Way by Bonnie Gortler

WOW! It’s that time of the year for you business owners, professionals, and entrepreneurs to slow down, relax, and collaborate with your family together by taking a vacation. You are not alone if you’re wondering where is the place to go to get away from it all. The perfect place for you to travel, the island of Aruba, one Happy Island, about 21 miles and located in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea. This island maybe small but it is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Aruba is an attraction to anyone who loves water sports by day and tries lady luck at night at a slot machine, black jack or crap table. The climate is 85-90 degrees year round and it’s out of the hurricane belt so weather is not a concern no matter what month.

Aruba is known for the trade winds as the trees sway back and forth, you always feel cool even on the hottest days. Many people go to Aruba for the first time, love it and go back again and again like my family does. Aruba, is my home away from home, it can be a perfect place for you to slow down, explore and experience a vacation that you will always remember. I’ve been traveling to the island of Aruba since 1980 sometimes twice a year. Aruba feels like a “second home” as I have watched it transform, the growth from a few restaurants and hotels, no traffic lights, goats milk that curdled in my coffee, to an island that flourishes. Aruba is rich with so many different activities, history, incredible scenery, amazing food, and wonderful people. Life is short, live life to the fullest! You have been working all year and have earned a well deserved break. Get out and explore this wonderful island, great people and book a trip now. The Arubians (locals) are very friendly and helpful. Service people in the hotels, owners in their stores, taxi drivers are all gracious and accommodating. Babysitting is available on the island for those of you with small children. English is spoken everywhere by everyone. The official language is Dutch. The local island dialect is Papiamento, a mixture of many different languages. If you went through school on Aruba as a local, you would have graduated from high school speaking Dutch, Papiamento, English, and Spanish. My daughter has an Arubian friend, for years who communicated with hand signals, facial expressions and eye contact each time they saw one another. The joy I felt was amazing when they were able to speak English together the first time and communicate their thought and explore all there is to do in the island together.

Everyone likes to do different things when they go on vacation depending on what is your budget, and how you would like to spend your time. When you go to Aruba, you can stay in an all inclusive resort, relax there until you leave. Others like to go to Aruba and stay on the beach all day and go to the casino all night. There are many companies that will take you snorkeling and other of water activities as well. Everybody is different and you get to choose how you would like to spend your vacation. There are different kinds of accommodations to suit your vacation needs including packages available which includes airfare and food. Whatever your budget is there is a place waiting for you. Now it’s up to you to decide that you stop, slow down and celebrate all you have done and giving yourself time off to take a vacation.

When booking your trip you will discover that Aruba has direct plane service to many US cities including: Charlotte, Atlanta, Newark, Boston, Miami, and New York. Aruba has much more to offer than sun, sand and slots. There are so many ways to enjoy Aruba for you and your family. Be sure to read my next article and I will tell you more about Aruba’s beauty, my favorite fine restaurants and accommodations of where to stay so you can enjoy Aruba YOUR way. ~Bonnie

Relationships: Personal vs. Business by Terrice Blackwell

Relationships: Personal vs. Business by Terrice Blackwell

This past weekend, I was blessed with an opportunity to speak to a group of women that were a part of The Children’s Restoration Network, Roswell Chapter. This chapter’s motto is “Going from Homeless to Wholeness”. As I prepared for this presentation, I considered their intimate and very personal situations. Though, I’ve never been homeless, I’ve definitely encountered situations that caused me to question my “wholeness”.

With this said, I strongly considered who I should invite to this event. Of course, my girlfriends (BFF’s) but I’ve also established very good business relationships with other ladies. Ladies that I truly enjoy what they’re doing and how they’re doing it, in a business respect. Ladies that I can definitely laugh and chat with, but do I know them personally? Do they really know me? Well, I decided to stick with my BFF’s. Though I have great relationships with my business associates, I feel as though there is a line that separates the two. Sunday’s event was very personal to me and it was not a business or networking event. Can we separate business and personal relationships without offending anyone? Am I the only one dealing with this issue?

Dictionary.com has defined “Networking” as: a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest. I meet a lot of people that share my common interests but should they be in my inner circle? Should I start inviting my BFF’s to my business functions? My business is my job and networking is a part of my job! When I network, I’m working! So the people that I’ve established great business relationships with, are they friends or my business associates?

As we network to grow our businesses, everyone we meet should not be in our inner circle and we should not be in theirs. Though we may get along extremely well, by no means should we assume we will be invited into their personal space. Please, don’t take this personal, it’s business! Topic from our Protocol for Professionals Workshop. Stay tuned for summer dates.

Belief in Yourself is Key In Life & Business by De Harris, WOW Founder

Belief in Yourself is Key In Life & Business by De Harris, WOW Founder

It is important to state when you own your own business its success or failure is in direct relation to what goes on between your ears! No kidding. There are many steps that move your great idea into reality but ultimately what holds most people back are their thoughts. Thoughts full of doubt, lack of faith and pure disbelief. Mind you, there is not one successful entrepreneur who has yet to NOT experience self-doubt at one time or another. We are only human and as a business owner there are realities that one must consider such as… Am I catering to the right market? Is my product good enough? Can our current infrastructure handle increased client demands?  Such questions are necessary and be asked because they are NOT rooted in a lack of self belief. These type of thoughts are strategic questions that can move you closer to the ideal you have within your heart and your mind. What we are discussing here are those personal thoughts of self-doubts and insecurity that can play over and over like a recording. Can I really do this? She was right when she said I didn’t have what it takes. I bet no one is going to buy my product/service, etc. These thoughts can rob you of energy and the ‘oomph’ needed to move you to a higher level. Sometimes it seems as if such thoughts will never end! The true difference is what you do with these thoughts. How do you handle them?  Do you let them keep playing in your mind or do you shift gears to focus on finding solutions? What you do is the difference between success and failure. The goal is to replace those negative thoughts with thoughts based in reality and thoughts that support your dreams and aspirations.Belief in Yourself is Key in Life and Business by De Harris, WOW Founder

Hopefully you have worked through such thoughts and understand how they manifest within your life and business. If you’ve been diligent then you know too with practice, you can strengthen that belief muscle and use it to your advantage as various situations call for your attention. If you are still seeking answers then maybe the tips below will help steer you in the right direction.

For starters…

Just do it!  learn to ignore that little voice and just do it anyway. Nike had it right with their famous ad campaign stating the phrase – ‘Just do it’.  You can repeat it over and over to help fuel your fire. When you see life as a series of continuous lessons you will understand how belief in yourself in life and business actually eases the flow the challenges that appear in your life. This happens because you see challenges as lessons and direct your attention on figuring out how to solve the issue at hand instead of wallowing in self-doubt. Each lesson is held within the experience itself and can unfold life changing opportunities. If you didn’t push yourself for the experience then you will miss out on both the lesson and opportunity that await your discovery.

Let go of perfection. Having a standard is one thing but perfection places high expectations and can causes unnecessary stress and strain within your world. When you have belief in yourself then you don’t need perfection. This is because the confidence you have in your strengths and abilities become a stronger part of you with every experience you allow within your life. You will find that belief in yourself is enough to handle any situation. Create your own standard of excellence and this too will help you grow beyond your comfort zone because you truly understand your abilities and not fall into the false belief of what someone else imposes on you.

Optimism is crucial so that can cure any self-doubt you may have. I speak from experience in that this has been the one trait that has carried me through what others may see as dark times. You must remember that self-doubt can crop up in even the most outwardly confident person. It is your job to instill a strong foundation of optimism within your heart and head. You do this by changing how you view the challenges that fall before you. Give yourself the gift of looking at your situation with new eyes full of hope and pure positiveness. Doing so will give you a never-ending supply of miracles within your life and business. You just need to open your mind enough to let go of the fog and allow the light to shine through!

Is that so tough? Is believing in yourself really a gamble? Is there really any risk in believing in your ability to handle any situation that comes your way? I think not. When we are open and honest about our strengths and weaknesses we discover self-awareness and with that kind of inside information you definitely have a jump on our competition! You are free to seek solutions. You are free to believe.

True belief in yourself in life and business will serve as the fuel you will need to move even closer to making your dreams a reality. Do make it a point today to stop allowing negative self-defeating thoughts rule your life. It is through each experience you are also able to strengthen your resolve and allow disbelief to disappear from your life. When you believe in yourself despite the odds is when you really hold the world in your hands. Wishing you everything you every dreamed for a happy life and happy business. ~De
